What a battery does
A commercial battery system can do one or more of the following: store cheap or free energy for use at expensive times, reduce peak demand to lower capacity charges, capture excess solar generation rather than exporting it at low rates, or provide grid services that generate additional revenue. The commercial value of each of those depends on how your site uses energy, what tariff you’re on, and what generation assets you already have.
Why modelling is the starting point
Before a battery can be properly sized, or a business case built, we need a minimum dataset from your site: half-hourly consumption data (typically 12 months), your current energy tariff including all energy and network charges, and your existing solar generation profile if you have one. Without those, any recommendation is an educated guess, and the payback figures you’ll see in vendor marketing are typically based on assumptions that may not apply to you.
What good modelling produces
A proper modelling assessment doesn’t just tell you what size battery to buy (if any). It shows you the optimal charge and discharge strategy for your specific site, the payback period under your current tariff, how the business case changes under different energy price scenarios, and the impact of pairing storage with your existing or planned solar generation.
