Commercial Solar Panel Repairs

Solar panels have become a cornerstone of sustainable energy solutions worldwide, converting sunlight into electricity with impressive efficiency. However, like any technology, they are not immune to wear and tear.

Over time, solar panel installations can experience various issues that necessitate repairs to maintain optimal performance and extend their lifespan.

The repairs required for solar panel installations can range from minor adjustments to significant interventions. Common issues include damaged or dirty panels, malfunctioning inverters, and wear on mounting systems. For instance, physical damage from weather events or debris can impede a panel’s efficiency, while inverter malfunctions can disrupt the entire system’s performance. Additionally, the mounting hardware that holds the panels in place may need periodic inspection to ensure stability and alignment.

Understanding and addressing these repair needs is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of a solar power system. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs not only enhance performance but also safeguard the investment in infrastructure. In this guide, we’ll explore the typical repairs required for solar panel installations, their causes, and best practices for ensuring that your solar energy system remains in top condition.

Common Issues with Solar Panels

Hot Spots

Hot spots are regions on a solar panel that experience elevated temperatures due to various issues. They can appear as discoloured patches on the panel’s surface or may be detected using thermal imaging. These areas can lead to increased resistance within the panel, reducing its overall efficiency and potentially causing long-term damage.

What Are Micro Cracks?

Micro cracks are small, often microscopic fractures that appear in the photovoltaic cells of a solar panel. They can occur in various parts of the cell, including the silicon wafer or the protective glass layer. Despite their small size, these cracks can interfere with the cell’s ability to effectively convert sunlight into electricity, leading to reduced overall panel efficiency.

What Is PID?

Potential Induced Degradation (PID) is a type of electrical degradation that occurs in solar panels when there is a high voltage difference between the photovoltaic cells and the grounding system or the frame of the panel. This voltage difference causes a leakage current to flow through the panel, which can lead to a reduction in the panel’s efficiency and power output. PID can manifest as a decrease in the panel’s voltage, increased leakage currents, and a gradual loss of power production.

Broken and Damaged plugs

Mismatched and broken plugs in a solar panel installation can pose several risks, impacting both the safety and efficiency of the system. These issues can lead to a range of problems, from electrical hazards to decreased energy output. Here’s a detailed look at the dangers associated with mismatched and broken plugs.

What Is Delamination?

Delamination occurs when these layers separate due to failure of the adhesive or bonding material.

Inverter failure

In a solar installation refers to the malfunction or breakdown of the inverter, a critical component that converts the direct current (DC) generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) used by home appliances and the grid. Inverter failure can disrupt the operation of a solar power system and lead to loss of energy production. Understanding the causes, mitigation strategies, and repair options for inverter failure is essential for maintaining a reliable solar energy system.

Why is cleaning your solar panels so important?

Cleaning your solar panels is crucial for maintaining their efficiency and maximising energy production. In a lot of instances, we have seen an uplift in performance up to and above 30% increase in yield. We recommend having your panels cleaned at the very least of once a year, however sites do vary and this will be taken into account when producing a quotation to ensure the best solution for your site. Here’s why keeping your solar panels clean is important:

Maximises Energy Efficiency

Prevents Long-Term Damage

Enhances Lifespan

Improves Aesthetic Appeal

Ensures Accurate Performance Monitoring

Helps with Compliance and Warranty

At BeBa Energy we have two fully fitted out panel cleaning vans which both clean with pure heated water to combat the dirt and grime which can sit on a panel and the surrounding mounting kit. In addition to this we also have two specialist panel cleaning robots which drive over the panels with rotating brushes each end being fed by pure heated water to thoroughly clean the panels.

When this cleaning method is not enough, we have a variation of specialist biocide treatments for lichen and moss or chemical treatments for concrete dust which can help lift these from the panels in a safe manner protecting the surface of the panels. This is applied by soft waterfed brushes or through the robot.

If this still isn’t sufficient and the debris hard set we also have a van mounted steam cleaning system which uses high temperature and low pressure steam cleaning to eat through the hard set lichen and growth to give the panel a completely new lease of life. This is then followed up by a robotic clean to ensure the panels are left with a spotless pure water finish.
